The SERVPRO Honor a Responder Program is another opportunity where SERVPRO is able to treat a first responder and their family to a college bowl game and recognize their hard work and sacrifice during an on-field presentation. The SERVPRO First Responder Bowl is a post-season college football bowl game played annually in the Dallas, Texas area. First held in January 2018, SERVPRO has sponsored this event and used it as an opportunity to honor some of our country’s greatest heroes – the first responders. Fire fighters, police officers, and EMTs are nominated through the SERVPRO website. Fourteen other bowl games from Hawaii to North Carolina have signed on and agreed to support the SERVPRO Honor a Responder Program during their games.


In 2021, sergeant Steven Austin was selected to attend the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl with family and friends as a way to say thank you for his years of dedicated service to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department in Rockville, Maryland.

A basic way to keep germs off your phone is to be more aware of what you touch before and after you use your phone. After you touch another object, if possible, wash your hands with soap and water. If that’s not possible, use hand sanitizer.

  • When eating: put your phone down while eating and wash your hands afterwards

With an increased awareness of how even small actions or lapses can become a real hazard to health, our employees are trained and equipped to adhere to a higher standard of safety.

In 2019, our franchise owner hired a new safety coordinator who comes to us with more than twenty years of experience in construction and warehouse management. Rhonda explains that she “likes to learn new things and do different things.” SERVPRO is benefitting from that attitude—these are just some of the new safety initiatives that she has put into place within the last year:

Overall Safety

  • We provide our training programs and videos in both English and Spanish.
  • Each month, the safety coordinator meets with crew chiefs for a general review of safety measures and results, and plans for new policies and training.

Vehicle Safety

  • We instruct workers in the correct operation of forklifts.
  • We inspect our trucks and forklifts every day.
  • We consistently assign each truck to a specific crew to increase familiarity and safety.

Equipment and Product Safety

  • We provide new training in fitting and wearing N-95 respirator masks, so that each worker has a mask that is the right size, is fitted correctly and sealed tightly to the face, while allowing adequate breathing.
  • We equip each crew and crew chief with duffel bags that contain hard hats, goggles, safety vests, shoulder dolly straps for heavy loads and our chemical information binder.
  • We check every truck daily to be sure it has a first aid kit, eyewash station and fire extinguisher.
  • We document our cleaning service products in a binder that explains appropriate uses, required protective equipment and procedures for use. Not only are our workers up to date on our products, they can easily answer customer questions.
  • We train our workers to properly lift heavy loads and use shoulder dolly straps.

Fire Safety

  • We train our crews to correctly use fire extinguishers, generators and third plug adapters.
  • We equip each piece of equipment and every truck with a third plug adapter, which allows our grounded equipment to be used safely in older homes that lack grounding outlets.
  • Every month, we inspect and date all fire extinguishers so that we know they are always ready to use.

Blood-Borne Pathogen Safety

  • We created enhanced training in the safe processing and disposal of blood-borne pathogens.
  • We equip each crew with a blood-borne pathogen duffel bag that includes hazmat suits, thick gloves, tweezers, needle containers and sealable bags for waste disposal.

Cleaning (Porous and Non-Porous Surfaces)

Cleaning—using a detergent and water to physically remove germs, dirt and impurities from surfaces and objects—can remove but doesn’t necessarily destroy viruses on porous and non-porous surfaces. Because many viruses are encased in fatty envelopes, however, it is likely that the same soaps that break down grease can pierce that outer envelope and inactivate a viral pathogen, too. It’s easier to remove contamination from smooth, non-porous surfaces than from porous surfaces, such as upholstery or carpeting.

We wet-clean non-porous materials, such as hard-surface floors, cabinets, countertops, doorknobs and plumbing fixtures, with a variety of SERVPRO hard-surface cleaners (general purpose) and cleaning methods.

We wet-clean porous, nonwater-sensitive materials, such as carpet, area rugs, upholstered items and draperies, using a hot water extraction or preconditioner-and-rinse method.

Note: Cleaning methods typically used on water-sensitive materials, such as vacuuming or dry sponging, are generally not effective because they do not remove enough soil and residue. Some materials, such as paper and paper products, cannot be cleaned with detergent and water without being damaged.

Disinfection (Non-Porous Surfaces)

SERVPRO follows CDC guidelines to disinfect with a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant, which are known to kill germs and disinfect non-porous surfaces or objects. We spray or mist these chemicals and let the disinfectant remain on the surface for ten minutes, sufficient to kill germs.

According to the CDC’s recommendations, we use disinfecting wipes on electronic items that are frequently touched, such as phones and computers, repeating with additional wipes to keep the surface wet for the recommended length of contact time.

What Is MRSA?

MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Suffering a fire, smoke, water, sewage or storm disaster leaves you feeling so vulnerable, as both your home and your clothing, furniture and other treasured possessions may have been damaged or destroyed. Earlier in 2019, SERVPRO® rolled out a new digital inventory system that tracks your possessions while we clean and store them and repair your home. We know at a glance the location of your items as well as their status: being cleaned or in storage.

A Secure Process, End to End

SERVPRO cares for 100% of your possessions. The process starts at your home, where our project manager evaluates each item to determine the necessary treatment. While you watch, we photograph each item, then secure your furniture in blankets and fragile items in bubble wrap. Then we wrap everything in plastic, label it with your name and unique QR-code. Smaller personal items are boxed, photographed, sealed and labeled.

Once all is packed, you review and sign off on a tracking form that lists all the items with photos. Further on in the process, this list can form the basis of your insurance claim. We then load your wrapped possessions into storage containers or vaults (also labeled and QR-coded) and transport everything to our storage and operations facility in Bloomfield. Raw sewage floating down the street ... five feet of water in basements ... more than 20 homes flooded. What a disaster! Fast, professional remediation is needed and soon!

SERVPRO of Glastonbury/Wethersfield recently partnered with two other nearby SERVPRO® franchises (owned by the same management team) to successfully tackle a water disaster that numerous other disaster remediation companies couldn’t handle. On October 3, 2018 water and sewer lines in West Hartford, Connecticut were being replaced when a 60-foot-long section of new pipe liner collapsed after a rainstorm. The resulting blockage forced waste water to gush into the street. Before long, the basements of almost two dozen homes in the neighborhood were flooded and four families were displaced.

The first SERVPRO® teams to arrive found a nasty scene: the street and many driveways were flooded with dark, foul water and multiple homes were inundated with the reeking biohazard. The crews went into action, pumping out basements, drying out structures and property and removing damaged items.
