Mold Remediation Fake News About Mold We can eliminate the myths about mold and clean up your property

People have some strange ideas about mold. You may hear things about mold that sound good but are not true. So you can understand the truth about mold SERVPRO of Glastonbury/Wethersfield is correcting these six fake news items.

Mold Fake News #1: Clean Off The Area Where You See Mold And You’re Safe
The truth is that mold can become latent and reactivate. You may not see any mold after you clean up but mold can still be there. Tiny mold spores replicate every 24 hours and often grow back. Mold grows due to a source of water, so you must locate and eliminate all sources of water to the mold-infected area. You’ll have a much easier time cleaning off hard surfaces - with water and detergent and then drying the surface. But absorbent materials (like ceiling tiles and carpeting) often require more than surface cleaning. Also know that moving mold around often spreads spores and increases risks to your property and its occupants.

Mold Fake News #2: Bleach Kills All Mold
Not true. Bleach can kill certain kinds of mold on nonporous surfaces. However, bleach does not  kill all kinds of mold on every type of surface. In particular, bleach’s effectiveness on porous surfaces like wood is poor at best.

Mold Fake News #3: Mold Presents The Same Health Risks To Everyone
The truth is that some people are more sensitive to mold than other people are. For them, inhaling or touching mold spores can cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash. People with serious mold allergies may have more severe reactions, including shortness of breath. In people with asthma who are allergic to mold, breathing in spores can also cause asthma attacks.
Other people who may be more sensitive to the effects of mold include:
•    Infants and children
•    The elderly
•    People whose immune systems are compromised due to HIV infection, cancer, liver disease, or chemotherapy
•    People with chronic lung disease

Mold Fake News #4: Mold Causes Sinusitis, Infections, And Immune System Damage
There’s no clear-cut evidence that sensitivity to mold causes chronic sinusitis. And superficial fungal infections (like toenail fungus or jock itch) are not the result of exposure to mold in your home or workplace. Superficial fungal infections generally result from fungi that develop inside the warm, moist environments found in shoes or tight garments. There’s also no credible evidence to suggest that environmental exposure to mold damages your immune system.

Mold Face News #5: Your Insurance Will Cover Mold Contamination
The insurance industry is concerned about the escalating and often unpredictable costs associated with mold testing and remediation. In fact, almost every residential insurance provider and most commercial property insurance policies now excludes coverage for loss or damage caused by or resulting from a "fungus"--which can be defined to include mold. Take no chances. Ask your insurance agent if your insurance covers mold damage.

Mold Fake News #6: Some Surfaces Never Attract Mold
Wrong again. Mold can grow on any surface that has water and humidity present. If a material sustains water damage, mold will likely grow. In fact, in areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting. It’s more difficult to remove moisture and mold from carpet than from hard surfaces.

Mold Fake News #7: It Takes Weeks Or Months For Mold To Become A Problem
Don’t believe it. In as little as 48 hours, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business when there’s a water intrusion, like a roof leak or leaking water line. It does not take weeks for mold to start causing health effects and significant damage to your property. Deal with any mildew or mold issue as soon as you see it.

Mold Fake News #8: Mold Can Be Completely Eliminated
Some mold remediation companies will promise to remove all mold. For the average homeowner or business owner, this is virtually impossible. Unless you need to maintain a clean room, which is used for surgery or semiconductor development, complete mold elimination is too costly and unnecessary for any home or building. Mold spores are omnipresent in the world. The best thing to do is to control moisture and react quickly to flooding by drying out water-damaged materials. Remember, some types of mold can grow and become a problem in as little as 48 hours.
